NBC Sports in First Quarter Earn New Estimates

With both the SuperBowl and Olympic trials in 1Q2012, NBC's regular pattern of winter sports has been adjusted more than usual. Professional RDs are likely to adjust estimates and rationale whenever applicable.

Today, I'm updating both the "Gold Standard" LPM market maintained here for Internal Use Only, as well as premiere RDRx NBC clients, like WRCB.

My question about their timing of these announcements.. this game has been scheduled for years, and NBC has carried it for at least 5 years in this exact time period. Does NBC wait until the sponsor has signed the contract? Really, I'm curious. Because if stations only sell what is listed in APT, this game wasn't in most inventories until today.

In contrast, RDRx clients have had this game in their inventory non-stop for years.. just like the Macy's Parade and Tournament of Roses Parade. So, if this isn't in your inventory today, you need our assistance.

Poker After Dark Vanishes on Saturdays, Too

Dawn update: Saturday night's PAD has now been replaced.

I'm going to guess that Heads Up Poker might also not come back next year, but I've yet to see anything to confirm it.

Wondering why this is all so hush hush and sudden? Full Tilt Poker, the sponsor of PAD, is not only being investigated for federal internet gambling practices, but in just the last 48 hours, the US government has claimed FTP is a "Ponzi scheme", with most of the cash players left in their accounts and thought was in reserve having been used for personal purposes by some at FTP.

Until Roberts&Company can figure out to whom they will sell 5.5 hours of NBC time per week, wine snobs can fill up their DVRs with In Wine Country reruns. I'll keep a close eye on APT, as NBC isn't going to be making any noise about this on their own.

4th Quarter Sports Specials Changes

Maybe it's the old retailer and LSM in me, but if I was selling to my favorite local retailer with targeted customers of Women 25-54 for the Holiday season, I would be all over the NBC Skating Specials in 4th Quarter. In every market, in every November sweep, these specials deliver consistent, bankable audiences.

Premium RDRx clients are being updated now that APT seems to have finished for the day.

POTUS Pushes Prime, Late News and Late Fringe Back Thursday Night

NBC and NFL are trying to make sure the game doesn't get over-run by the President and the GOP reply scheduled for Thursday. So, they're extending the run of the game time for another half hour, pushing everything back, including your local newscast.

Obama Squeezes Between GOP & NFL Next Thursday Night

Posted: 09/02/2011 04:09:47 PM
Type: Announcements
Message: NBC News will provide a Special Report covering the President's Address to Congress beginning at 7:00pm ET, LIVE to all stations. Coverage will end as soon as possible. Transition to NFL programming will be seamless. Network operations will inform stations of any impact to commercial pods in the NFL Kickoff program via Urgent Messages on Thursday evening. Revised contingencies to follow on Tuesday 9/6.

This means the longer the POTUS speech and GOP rebuttal, the fewer spots (you've already sold) run. If you've got clients running spots in the pre-game special, make-good plans should be on your mind when you get into the station on Tuesday morning. Remember, lag kills.

Friday and Saturday Night Changes This Month

There are several of these changes; see APT for the details.

Here's just one:

Message: WHITNEY is now booked on 9/23 and 9/30. This booking overrides all previously issued bookings, formats, and details. Please see individual airdate for updated information.

RDRx clients have already been updated, a bit later than normal due to a dentist appointment yesterday afternoon. But you won't find this change listed on any of the consumer sites yet. You *do* go to APT several times a day, don't you?

If your NBC station's Prime and Specials inventory hasn't been updated since Wednesday, it's wrong.

NBC Stations: What's In Your Inventory?

Sorry for the awful "Capital One" headline, but it's a real question.

Compare the next two months of NBC's Prime Schedule on APT with what's in your station's current inventory. (Yes, we have access to APT here.)

If you aren't happy with what you see in your MediaOffice inventory, or don't even want to look because you know already, it may be time to call a fellow broadcaster who can help.

It's not your fault. Look to the right and see how often NBC changes Prime programming schedules. Hundreds of times each year, NBC moves your inventory around with little time or notice in advance.

You almost need someone whose full-time job it is to watch your back. But you can't afford that, can you?

Yes, you can.

It's too soon to tell for sure, but this might be the best July book in years for the RDRx premium client in Chattanooga, WRCB.

Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve Specials Officially Booked

OneDomain RDRx premium clients have had these programs in inventory since last year.

Basic NBC Prime and Specials Inventory Listings Now Available

If you're a regular here, you know RDRx Premium clients use the RDRx service as an outsourced replacement for a full-time Research Director. But for those stations without any kind of research staffing, internal or otherwise, there are still times the MediaOffice system must be maintained by the client.

Four times a year, even the smallest TV station has to update their ratings when sweeps data is released. During the remainder of August, Nielsen subscribing stations in nearly all DMAs will be installing July 2011 survey data, which has just started to be released on August 13th.

MediaOffice NBC TV station clients who would like a current version of either the Eastern or Central Time Zone versions of NBC TV primetime shows and specials should contact their OneDomain Regional Sales Managers.

For DIY stations, this information is at No Charge through August. There are nearly 100 lines of prime programs and specials, including Fall Premiere dates and special events.

If you want this inventory installed on your station's MediaOffice system, customized service is available at extra cost. And, if you want Selling Book estimates, we provide those as well.

Chargers-Cowboys Replaces Hall of Fame Game for NBC

NEW YORK - July 26, 2011 - The NFL announced today that the San Diego Chargers at Dallas Cowboys preseason game has been moved from Saturday, Aug. 20 to Sunday, Aug. 21, and will now be televised nationally on NBC beginning at 8 p.m. ET.

On Monday, the league cancelled the Pro Football Hall of Fame game, which was previously scheduled to be broadcast on NBC on Sunday, Aug. 7.

NBC's second preseason game features the Oakland Raiders hosting Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, Aug. 28 also at 8 p.m. ET.

The NFL will open the regular season with NFL Kickoff on NBC, Thursday, Sept. 8, with a matchup of the last two Super Bowl Champions as the Packers host the Saints from Lambeau Field. The season concludes on NBC with Super Bowl XLVI from Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on Feb. 5, 2012.

NFL's Goodell Cancels Hall of Fame on August 7th Despite Deal

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. (AP) — NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says the Hall of Fame game between St. Louis and Chicago has been canceled despite owners voting in favor of a tentative deal to end the lockout, pending player approval.

The Rams and Bears originally were scheduled to open their training camps this weekend and play in the Hall of Fame game to open the preseason schedule on Aug. 7 in Canton, Ohio.

Goodell says Thursday that the Hall of Fame induction ceremonies will go on as planned but says "the time is just too short" to have the teams prepare and play the game as scheduled.

I'll put TBA in there now, and will watch in the morning to see what NBC will do.

Friday PM note: NBC has reinstated normal time period programming; AGT and Marriage Ref.

Hmm.. Does NBC Really Mean Thursday?

Since they have posted in APT2Go other Thursday programming, I'm guessing they meant Wednesday. But who knows? Only the Meatball@30 Rock*.

Update @ 9:57a: Looking at the full version of APT, I see they've cleared out all three hours of Wednesday, September 14th, which is now TBA. My guess is that will be the night for the America's Got Talent finale, which was the lead-in to these programs until today. I've put a number of those options in RDRx inventory, so when 30Rock decides, we'll be better prepared.

Say Goodbye to Wimbledon on NBC

http://www.miamiherald.com/2011/07/05/2300368/wimbledon-coverage-goes-from-nbc.html

ESPN Acquires All Wimbledon Live U.S. TV Rights Including Singles Finals

Twelve-Year Agreement Starting in 2012

ESPN has acquired the exclusive U.S. television rights to live action from The Championships, Wimbledon, including both the Ladies' and Gentlemen's Singles Finals, in a 12-year agreement with the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club beginning in 2012. Comprehensive coverage from start to finish across a variety of platforms will result in more tennis for fans and all of it live.

ESPN will present Wimbledon on its multimedia array of platforms, including both ESPN and ESPN2 simultaneously the second Monday-Wednesday. This will allow for expanded coverage of the Round of 16 and live telecasts of all quarterfinals. ESPN will televise the semifinals and finals. ESPN on ABC will broadcast a three-hour highlights show on the "middle Sunday" of the tournament, and will reair the finals on a same-day basis at 3 p.m. ET.

In addition to the newly acquired rights, all of ESPN's existing coverage will continue -- television, broadband, mobile, and other rights in the U.S., Latin America and Canada (through 2021). Since 2003, ESPN networks have aired approximately 100 hours annually - with another 650 on ESPN3.com, primarily on weekdays and capped by one Ladies' and one Gentlemen's semifinal. Through 2023, the television schedule will increase to more than 140 hours, including full live national coverage of the semifinals and finals. ESPN3.com's schedule will expand to 750 hours, also with the semifinals and finals presented live.

WRCB: Local Television News Done Right

What happens to a local news audience when an "Act of God" life-changing event like tornadoes and floods first hit, then the community begins to recover in the first weeks, then gains it's feet and moves on in life?

My client WRCB now has the opportunity to examine the fruits of their own news-gathering labors during a time of great difficulty. On the eve of the first day of May Sweeps, storms ripped through their community. The weeks of recovery following fell within the May Sweeps, giving us this unique view.

Even after a quarter-century of looking at diary-based results, I was shocked to see the huge increase in young adult viewing SHARE increases for WRCB. Other stations in the market lost this share.

Normally, I have little use for July Sweeps, as stations know they are not kind to network prime and will be used against them in negotiations. But this year, the July 2012 Sweep will provide invaluable data on how WRCB can keep those new, young viewers.

May 2011 Data Arrives

Working on client server now.

Weekend Changes for NBC Prime

NBC changed Saturdays in August and September again, and once I find the May2011 data on WRCB's server, I'll include that in their update.

Well, Nielsen Changes Their Mind Again

Yep, Chattanooga data will be released late tonight or early tomorrow morning.

My premiere client, WRCB, will have full updates for their own inventory, and for competitive stations, within 8 working hours of that time.

Many Southern Markets Data Delayed By Nielsen

After we asked Nielsen yesterday why we weren't getting certain markets as scheduled, we were told yesterday by Nielsen that "on June 2nd, notice was posted.." etc.

This delay is obviously because of the horrific weather that ripped through the deep south in the first week of the May Sweeps. Diary-based research doesn't work when the mailbox is gone, and the postman doesn't come by anymore.

Well, my clients were just told on Friday. That's not June 2nd. I found out yesterday.

Speaking with sales managers yesterday in both Birmingham and Chattanooga, I discovered some stations in Birmingham may not want the book issued at all, and Chattanooga has been told to wait at least 10 more days for data.

This huge delay is what gives me the ability to offer the beta special below.

Stanley Cup Game 7 Tomorrow Night!

In what should be the highest rated NHL game of the year, Wednesday night will see the final game in the Stanley Cup.

Although neither the game nor future Wednesday night programming are mentioned in APT, I'll be "hiatusing" regular prime for this Wednesday, and RDRx clients will find Game Seven already in Specials Inventory... only this time, it won't have a Question Mark in the name.

11:30a Update: Affiliate traffic and sales will be preempting next Wednesday's SVU encore with an AmGtTalent hour. RDRx clients already have updated inventory and estimates in their MediaOffice systems.

NBC Summer Changes for Friends With Benefits

Just announced in the last few minutes on APT2Go, Friends With Benefits appears on Friday nights in August, even though they announced just yesterday it would run on Saturday.

More changes still coming.. I've seen new stuff three times today.

Every single local NBC station now has to make programming grids, inventory lines and audience estimate changes, now, again.

If you don't have a full time Research Director and you subscribe to MediaOffice, I can make those changes for you. Just call.

Late Summer Appears in APT2Go

Perhaps someone was trying to get out of 30 Rock early for the three four day weekend, because late last night, NBC posted a good number of previously unconfirmed summer reruns. After I have another cup of coffee, I'll see exactly if this has any effect on existing inventories.

Added several hours later:
Whew.. there were a lot more changes than I thought.. July and August prime look much different than they did yesterday. Happily, RDRx clients already now up to date with all announced NBC summer and fall programming.

NBC Sports and the NHL are finalizing the Stanley Cup move-up scenarios. We anticipate releasing details by the end of the week. Upfront Happens Early for NBC

WITH A COMMITMENT TO INNOVATION, STRATEGIC POSITIONING AND SEASON-LONG STRENGTH, NBC REVEALS ITS 2011-12 PRIMETIME SCHEDULE

Fall and Mid-Season Lineups Feature New Dramas "Smash," "Prime Suspect," "The Playboy Club," "Awake," "Grimm" and "The Firm"

New Comedies Are "Up All Night," "Whitney," "Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea," "Free Agents," "Best Friends Forever" and "Bent"

NEW YORK CITY -- May 15, 2011 -- NBC has introduced its 2011-12 primetime schedule, showcasing six new dramas and six new comedies from a roster of renowned hit-makers that includes Steven Spielberg, Lorne Michaels, Brian Grazer, Tom Werner, John Grisham and Peter Berg, among many others.

The season's new dramas are "Smash," "Prime Suspect," "The Playboy Club," "Awake," "Grimm" and "The Firm"; and the new comedies are "Up All Night," "Whitney," "Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea," "Free Agents," "Best Friends Forever" and "Bent."

Returning shows include "Parenthood," "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," "Harry's Law," "Chuck" (for its fifth and final season of 13 episodes), "Community," "Parks and Recreation," "The Office," "30 Rock" and "Dateline NBC." Among next season's returning alternative series are "The Voice," "The Sing-Off," "The Celebrity Apprentice" and "The Biggest Loser," each in two-hour formats.

The new lineup combines schedule stability with strategic changes that position the network for future growth. Key facets of the schedule include a new hour of comedy with the Wednesday debuts of "Up All Night" (8-8:30 p.m. ET) and "Free Agents" (8:30-9 p.m. ET) and an update to NBC's critically acclaimed Thursday lineup with the premieres this fall of the new comedy "Whitney" (9:30-10 p.m. ET) and the first-year drama "Prime Suspect" (10-11 p.m. ET). In addition, NBC has made a strong commitment to original scripted programming on Friday nights with the pairing of "Chuck" (8-9 p.m. ET) in its climactic season with the new drama "Grimm" (9-10 p.m. ET).

The #1 new series of the current season, "The Voice," returns at mid-season on Monday nights (8-10 p.m. ET) and will serve as the lead-in to the new musical drama "Smash" (10-11 p.m. ET). In the fall on Mondays from 8-10 p.m. ET will be another growing NBC reality success, "The Sing-Off," now in a weekly format following its strong December showings of the past two years.

Additional details unveiled in today's announcement include a run of uninterrupted originals for "30 Rock" starting at mid-season and a post-football Sunday lineup of "Dateline NBC" (7-8 p.m. ET), "The Celebrity Apprentice" (8-10 p.m. ET) and the new drama "The Firm" (10-11 p.m. ET). Additional new series ready for mid-season include the drama "Awake" and the comedies "Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea," "Best Friends Forever" and "Bent."

The announcements were made by Bob Greenblatt, Chairman, NBC Entertainment.

"Next season begins the rebuilding of the NBC primetime schedule, and our goal is to reinvigorate our audience with a line-up of appointment television that includes our best returning shows and a variety of innovative and attention-getting new series. We'll be placing a great deal of emphasis on how we launch each one of our programs and on maximizing the network's strengths throughout the fall and well into mid-season," said Greenblatt. "Considering it's only been three months since new management took over, I'm very pleased with what has resulted from a very strong pilot season. And with a powerful new asset like 'The Voice' already in hand, we go into the 2011-12 season with cautious but incredible optimism."

More Voice Coming This Summer

Shh.. don't tell my co-workers that I'm checking APT during the teleconference.

What a surprise! NBC has changed Summer Prime again. More Voice. Changes after the teleconference this afternoon LV time. (sorry for the minor delay)

Added 15 mins later: My client has been updated and will find L&O:SVU reruns no longer at 10pm on Tuesdays in June.

Twelve More Sports Changes in APT

Lots of NBC Sports Specials changes for later this year.

Although I'll be in teleconference this week with our Birmingham HQ, I'll use breaks and lunches to update clients today.

Ann Curry on Today

Having met Ann in person, I'm delighted by this choice.

Now, if we can just get "Ironpants" as her weekday co-host, I just might watch again. This is a good day for him, too.. his son just started at WBBM-TV WMAQ-TV, NBC in Chicago, today.

Ah, it's not to be. Yet.

Say Hello To 3rd & 4th Quarter Sports Changes

Yes, it was just 3 weeks ago we were first told about the schedule still appearing in APT, but this evening we've just gotten word of many changes to come from 30 Rock.

NBC RDRx clients will find these changes already published to their inventories when they arrive @ work Friday morning.

Want to find out how to become a client? Ask your OneDomain representative or just push the darn button over there -----> .

(Oh, and I still think NFL will air on Christmas Night.)

Say Goodbye to NHL This Weekend

NBC has changed this Saturday again. And although APT doesn't mention it, my guess is there's no NHL on Sunday, too.

Not only will there not be NHL on Saturday, but they've now dropped the half hour "bonus Derby coverage" they announced late Tuesday night, which replaced World Of Adventure at 3:30p. So, that gets deleted from client inventory. Thanks, NBC!

So, NBC local stations have lots of weekend hours to fill with local programming and ads. Client stations who provide fill-in programming to RDRx get them listed as such.

Monday, May 2, 2011

NBC Sports Changes Saturday (5/7)

Say goodbye to the spots you booked in World of Adventure. Late Friday evening, NBC decided to add another half hour of "Bonus Derby Coverage" starting at 3:30pm ET.

Ever notice how NBC normally lists the entire 3 hour block (now 3.5 hours) as one event in APT? Yet when they submit names to Nielsen, they break out the actual race from the hours of lead-in programming.

There But For The Grace Of God....

OneDomain's Birmingham HQ is South of downtown, in Riverchase, near the community of Hoover. About 45 miles WSW of Riverchase is Tuscaloosa, the home of the University of Alabama. Here's what Tuscaloosa looks like this morning after a second wave of storms hit late Wednesday:

See Photos 2-6 of this slideshow from the NY Times.

As far as I can tell from company emails, no employee from ODI was injured during yesterday's storms and tornadoes, but there was a great deal of damage at many homes and everyone knows someone whose home has been damaged or destroyed.

Many of our workers are helping friends, neighbors and relatives. It's just the way ODI people ARE. But those who are not are currently staffing our telephone helplines (landlines are down, but we use VOIP) and Bomgar support machines. Our Birmingham office is OPEN.

If there is anything I can do to help ODI clients during this time, just push the button that says "Call Me" over there ---------------------------->.

Birmingham HQ Hit By Bad Weather

Overnight, storm winds blew through Birmingham, and power was cut off for several hours.

At dawn, our IT people tried to get into the office to restart servers, and this is what they were greeted with:

NYTimes article about the storm
.

From CNN:

There were also reports of damage at Birmingham's Shuttlesworth International Airport. Spokeswoman Toni Bass said damage was reported to one airport hangar and several trees were down around the airport. Passenger operations were not affected, she said.

Some 269,000 people were without power, most of them in the metro Birmingham area, as of about 8:20 a.m. (9:20 a.m. ET), said Michael Sznajderman, spokesman for Alabama Power, which covers the southern two-thirds of the state. "We're chipping away" at them, he said, but crews may have to pause as the second line of storms approaches.

"Major damage" was reported in six counties, and it appears to be more widespread than that from an April 15 storm, August said. Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley's office was getting a state of emergency declaration ready, she said.

Several school systems were dismissing students early or were closed Wednesday because of the weather, The Birmingham News reported.

So, if you call our Bham offices this morning, don't be surprised if we're a bit behind.

Paul Reiser Gone; Office Repeats Fill May Sweep

Yesterday, NBC canceled next Wednesday's Minute To Win It and SVU to make room for a "next-night" encore of The Voice premiere airing Tuesday.

This afternoon, NBC canceled Paul Reiser and will replace it with Office re-runs effective next week, which I'm sure few will protest.

Still no Thursday summer programming from NBC. Maybe next week...

NBC/Comcast/VS Extends NHL For Decade

Not that NBC stations in the Deep South or Pacific areas really care, because NHL simply doesn't do well in areas that get a lot of sun. And how many "minority" NHL fans are there?

But, if you want to read the press release, the folks at FutonCritic are happy to reprint it.

Feb 2011 Sweeps Data Arrives for WRCB

February 2011 Sweeps data has arrived on the Chattanooga server, and I'm enjoying the four-fold increase in PAVs to choose from. However, I wonder how those with less experience are handling this matter?

WRCB Sales Management will get email later today with a draft Master Planner.

Oh, it's the weekend.. Good thing it's cloudy, windy and cold in Las Vegas today.
And just miserable levels of Mulberry pollen in the air. So, with cat, blackberry cobbler and computers, I'm stayin' in today and rocking Selling Books. :)

NBC Sports Estimates Refreshed

Each NBC Sports program from now until the 4th of July Weekend has just been double-checked for exact time, as well as the most accurate audience estimate with full rationale.

Next week, I'll begin working on Third and Fourth Quarters... right now, they are about 96% accurate, and that's just not good enough for my clients.
