NBC Says They (Will) Win November Sweeps

WITH A CURRENT GAIN OF 17 PERCENT VERSUS THE YEAR-AGO SWEEP IN ADULTS 18-49, NBC MOVES FROM #4 IN NOVEMBER 2011 TO #1 IN 2012

NBC’S SCHEDULE INCLUDES THE SWEEP’S #1 SERIES IN 18-49, ‘SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL’; THE #1 UNSCRIPTED SERIES, ‘THE VOICE’; THE #1 NEW DRAMA, ‘REVOLUTION’; AND THE #1 NEW COMEDY, ‘GO ON’

NBC’S 2.8 FOR THE SWEEP TO DATE IS A FOUR-YEAR HIGH AND THE CURRENT 17 PERCENT LEAD OVER SECOND PLACE MATCHES THE BIGGEST NOVEMBER MARGIN FOR ANY NET IN 10 YEARS

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. – November 20, 2012 – For the first time since 2003, NBC’s primetime lineup has delivered #1 ratings in adults 18-49 for the November sweep, rising from a #4 ranking in the November period one year ago to a #1 finish this year, according to “live plus same day” viewership data from Nielsen Media Research.

With 25 of 28 nights counted in the November sweep, NBC is averaging a 2.8 rating, up 17 percent versus NBC’s 2.4 rating at the conclusion the November 2011 sweep. In averages through Sunday, Nov. 18, NBC leads sweep runner-up CBS by 0.4 of a point or 17 percent, with Monday through Wednesday results yet to be factored into sweep averages. If NBC finishes the sweep with that 17 percent margin, it will match the biggest advantage for any network in a November sweep since NBC won by 19 percent in 2002 (Fox also won by 17 percent in 2009).

 How many markets will be allowed to use November sweeps data due to Sandy?  Still no final word.

Flood of Changes to NBC Prime Hits APT

Every week between now and Feb sweeps has been changed.  A ton of specials which had been previously announced, scheduled and booked have been moved.

Client stations have been updated.  This marks the 7th significant scheduling revision of NBC's 4th and 1st Quarter prime in 3 weeks.

Alexandra Wallace, a senior vice president of NBC News, will be the new executive in charge of all four hours of the highly profitable “Today,” according to people at the network who described the plan on condition of anonymity because it had not been announced. She and a producer yet to be selected will succeed Jim Bell, who has been in charge of the show since 2005. Mr. Bell led the campaign for Ms. Curry’s removal from the show earlier this year and received much of the blame for the damage done by the transition.

Finally, Political Spots Begin Death Rattle

For the first time in a month, I turned on live local TV news this morning.  I turned it off when the first spot break aired.

Watching Las Vegas television news lately has become a lot like a chef watching people eat dirt;  you can't understand why people would knowingly, eagerly consume filth with no nutritional value.

 “We have a joke around here,” said Lisa Howfield, the general manager of KSNV, the NBC station. “Pretty soon we’re going to have such long commercial breaks that people are going to tune in and all they’ll hear is: ‘Hello, welcome to News 3. And goodbye.’ ”

Maybe it's because I live in Las Vegas, where there's a huge disparity between the billionaires who support one candidate and their hourly workers who do not.

But I will be so glad to see the end of the hateful, lying, irresponsible ads which pollute our airwaves.


Update:  I voted.  For 60 seconds, I had as much power as the billionaires.

Final Update on November 8th: Actually, turns out I had more power than the billionaires for those 60 seconds.  Money can't buy you everything, Sheldon. The power of  honest peons like me, in mass, is what you fear.

Update on November 6th:  APT notifies local stations of cancellations of NHL events on 11/23 and 1/1/13.   These have not been in client inventories for several weeks.

Tomorrow Night's Prime Changes Again...

NEW YORK -- November 1, 2012 -- In response to the widespread devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy, the networks of NBCUniversal -- including NBC, Bravo, CNBC, E!, G4, MSNBC, Style, Syfy and USA – will join forces to air a one-hour live benefit telethon, “Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together,” on Friday, November 2 (8-9 pm ET).

Hosted by NBC “Today” anchor Matt Lauer, the telethon will be broadcast from the New York studios of NBC at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. It will air live across the East Coast and tape-delayed on the West. Additional networks could join the broadcast of the telethon prior to airtime.

Money collected will be donated to the American Red Cross relief efforts for Hurricane Sandy.

The telethon also will be live-streamed on NBC.com.

This is the fourth program scheduled for this hour in the last 3 weeks, including this announcement just 36 hours ago, but the first one without any commercial (read political) spots inside.  With so little time left before election day, few local stations want to actually REFUND money for pre-paid political ads, so traffic departments have got to be insane right now.

This preempts an encore of Revolution.  Now that the sci-fi hit has been given a four month hiatus from December through March, keeping momentum up seems to be less of an issue for 30 Rock.

This afternoon, NBC notified stations of a revised political spot schedule through Election Day.  I'm sure traffic departments and sales management are more than ready for the Polls to open.. and close.

And then, this happened.

But just three days later, all of the above posts vanished from the What's New log @ NBC.  Sigh.
