Wait..  NBC is building last-minute extending a business model on a 12 hour later replay of entertainment-grade investment news and advice?  So, who is their prime audience target?

Individual investors of substantial resources who do not have cable, DVR, satellite DBS or internet service AND are up at 3am.  But if they are up at 3am and are investors, don't you think they want NEWS instead of old comedy and Wall Street schtick? (sp?)

Oh well, I'm sure the people in New York City are much smarter than I am.  They must have realized that Pacific and Hawaiian viewers own time zones mean 3am is MUCH closer to Opening Bell than in NYC.  But then... the world ends at Albany, right?

pah note:  The 2006 Winter Olympics saw a lot of stations selecting this option, but far fewer than chose it in 2002 when the games were based in Salt Lake City.  In 2010, even fewer stations were willing to do the extra work to customize this half hour every day AND find a new home for the syndicated programming and spots normally airing in the time period.

My guess is that even fewer smaller markets will select this rehash of Olympic coverage in 2014;  we now have something called "the internet" and Comcast will be spreading Olympic coverage on every channel in the cable world it owns or controls.  NBC stations are no longer the only place to get this coverage.

pah comment.. WOW!  They've sucked in Golf Central Live into the coverage of the Golf Events themselves, which will lower the total ratings of the named event. If NBC heavily weights the local spot avails towards the first half hour, they'll have gamed the system to benefit network advertisers who could be sold peoplemeter numbers later in the telecast by the minute which will always be better than the PAV including the half hour chatter which draws little audience, while local stations will use a PAV of the entire show, which would be an overstatement of the audience they can reach during their front-loaded avails.  But because it will be constant, it will become the new normal.  Oh, and look when it starts.  In three days. Jack Welch would be proud.

A personal note:  On August 28th, 1963, I stood with my father on a curb in Washington DC, where he worked for the American Bar Association.  We watched MLK Jr. walk by.  I wish I remembered it better and I certainly couldn't see it well; I had yet to get glasses for my 20/200 vision.  But or a Roman Catholic white kid brought up in a lily-white world, this was the first of many events which rocked me.  Turns out, it was for the better.

 

NBC Sports & Olympics Research Jobs Appear

For a bunch of reasons, I've never been a fan of watching competitive sports on television.

When it comes to sports, I need extra assistance when trying to figure out future estimates.

This job posting from NBC this morning bring me hope for the future of local NBC stations selling NBC Sports.

It would be nice if NBC Sports would share some of the research this person gathers with non-O&O's.    NBC O&O's are now using WideOrbit/OneDomainInc (WOODI) software, managed from a central location by a team of professionals, to handle their own inventory and estimate needs

Even though they maintain them, the folks at 30 Rock aren't sharing their inventory files with non-O&O's..   but then again, I provide local stations with similar services, so I'm glad they didn't "snipe" my business.

Effective this Sunday, August 4 for both Pre and ALL Regular Season NFL games, the first :30 in the two NFL halftime station breaks will be a coverable Network Promo. The total length of each station break is not changing. Continue to use the same :31 Net promo to cue both station breaks and roll over this new :30 coverable Network promo in order to keep the local break the same length.

Also note: the placement of a :30 IMP in the 2 Pre-Season games is shifting from End of 3rd Quarter to Early Halftime to be consistent with the Regular Season format. Again, there is no change to total length of the station breaks.

Vacation Month in Manhattan Means Few Posts

It's not that I'm on vacation. And it's not that I think vacations are bad.. everyone needs them.

I'm guessing a good chunk of the NBC folks who decide things are not in their offices at 30 Rock this week.  July Sweeps are over, August and early September schedules are set, all of the premiere work starts in mid-September..

If I had 2 or 3 weeks of vacation and worked for NBC, I would be anyplace other than Manhattan right now.  And since seniority gets to pick vacation dates first, the choicest weeks would go to the top folks at any company.

So, don't expect to see any major announcements today.  If anything, we'll get a ping from the people remaining to show everyone they WERE there.

Game Show, Wall of Fame, is Announced

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. --  (July 11, 2013) – NBC has ordered eight episodes of the original hour-long game show “Wall of Fame,” from Endemol USA (“Big Brother,” “Wipeout,” “Steve Harvey,” “Freakshow”) it was announced today by Paul Telegdy, President, Alternative and Late Night Programming, NBC.   Endemol USA, a leading producer of multiple genres of unscripted and scripted programming, will produce the new series.

“Wall of Fame” is a comedic game show where one family can win big money if they can not only answer pop culture trivia questions correctly, but can also guess whether members of our celebrity "Wall of Fame" delivered the correct answers to those same questions.  The celebrity answers will sometimes surprise you, sometimes impress you, but they will always make viewers laugh.

Endemol USA has a successful track record for producing hit game shows.  “Deal or No Deal,” based on the international Endemol format which aired in over 50 countries, aired on NBC for four seasons and consistently ranked in the U.S. as one of NBC’s highest rated shows.

"This series offers something for everyone in a unique game show format that rewards families who know their pop culture trivia," said Telegdy.  "Our celebrities will add an extra element of surprise as they too will have their knowledge tested -- providing a high potential for many unpredictable and raucous answers."
