NHL Labor Dispute Causes NBC/Comcast Problems

The worst case scenario for Comcast-owned NBC, which holds the exclusive national broadcast rights to NHL games, is for the entire upcoming season to be canceled. That's not without precedent. The NHL and its players union scrapped the entire 2004-05 season after failing to achieve a labor deal.

A better, but not ideal, scenario for NBC would be a delay to the NHL season, similar to what happened to the National Basketball Association last year. The first regular season NHL game is scheduled for October 11, but exhibition games start about two weeks earlier. 

The timing could not be worse for Comcast, which is relying on hockey to build up the NBC Sports Network, its fledgling cable sports channel. A lockout would leave the network, previously known as Versus and the Outdoor Life Network, with major holes to fill in its prime-time lineup.

Phelps sat down exclusively late Saturday night with NBC Olympics host Bob Costas, and disclosed his innermost thoughts about his Olympic odyssey, beginning as a 15-year old boy in Sydney in 2000, to his six-gold medal performance in Athens in 2004, through the unprecedented 8 for 8 in Beijing in 2008, and ending this week at the London Olympics with four more gold and two silver medals to cap the greatest Olympic career ever.

NBC's New Head of Primetime Scheduling Announced

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. – August 1, 2012 – In a move to further accelerate the strategic vision and future of NBC Entertainment, Jeff Bader was named President, Program Planning, Strategy and Research, NBC Entertainment, by Robert Greenblatt, Chairman of NBC Entertainment, to whom he will report.

In this newly created position, Bader will be responsible for overseeing long and short term program planning for NBC’s primetime, daytime and late night programming. The NBC Entertainment scheduling department will report to him as well as the division's research team. He will also supervise the windowing strategy for primetime and late night programming across all NBCU platforms as well as interfacing with NBC News and NBC Sports. Further, he will work closely with the east coast's network division led by Ted Harbert -- with whom he has worked before -- to provide coordination with the sales, affiliate, and distribution areas.

Said Greenblatt: “I am thrilled that Jeff Bader is joining the new NBC family. He is widely known as one of the broadcasting industry's most consummate executives and he will be integral to the re-building of NBC in many ways. He has deep experience in so many key areas of running a network in today's challenging environment that he will instantly prove to be invaluable to us as we look to the future. For more than two decades, Bader has had numerous leadership roles at ABC. Most recently, he was Executive Vice President, Planning, Scheduling and Distribution, ABC Entertainment Group. In this position, he was ABC Entertainment's senior executive in charge of primetime and late-night program planning and scheduling. Beyond these network-specific duties, he was responsible for windowing strategies for ABC Entertainment Group programs across all platforms, both domestic and international.

Bader joined ABC in 1988 as Supervisor, Audience Analysis. He became Manager, Audience and Program Research, in 1989; Manager, Program Planning and Scheduling, in 1991; Director in 1992; Executive Director in 1994; Vice President, Current Series Programming, in 1995; Vice President, Program Planning and Scheduling, in 1996; Senior Vice President, Program Planning and Scheduling, in 1998 and Executive Vice President ABC Entertainment in 2000.

Prior to joining ABC, Bader held senior research positions at the MTM Distribution Group. His first job professionally was at NBC Entertainment.

Bader received a Master of Arts degree with distinction from the Annenberg School of Communications at the University of Southern California. He graduated with honors from Williams College in Massachusetts.

Raised in Wayland, Massachusetts, he now resides in Los Angeles, California.

Does Your NBC Station Need MediaOffice Help?

RatingBook.com Clients Have May-based Estimates. Do you?

NBC television stations using RatingBook.com services now have updated audience estimates for the remainder of 2012 and the first half of 2013, using audience composition data from the just-released May 2012 sweeps.

If you're responsible for hitting local advertising sales at an NBC station with MediaOffice, and  you don't have a Research Director, you really do owe it to yourself, your employees, your station and your career to consider outsourcing this vital task.

May Data Arrives; Estimating Work Begins

Creating a pure MayEST Selling Book is very easy, but coming up with 4th Quarter 2012 estimates isn't.

I've been working on RatingBook.com clients since dawn; all clients will have their systems totally updated and ready by Monday morning, and GSMs will have May12-based Master Planners for their stations tonight.

Waiting For May 12 Data..

During this period of time each June, TV stations anxiously await the demographic shares they will be selling for the remainder of the year.

RatingBook.com clients know I check their MediaOffice servers several times a day during their window of data arrival..  the sooner I start, the sooner your sales team can get to work.

While I do have access to Nielsen's release dates, my experience over the past 16 years of RD work in metered markets tells me not to count the chickens before they hatch;  good intent means little if the data isn't accessible to the end user.

BTW, the Nielsen VIP telephone hotline, which used to be updated each day sweeps data was shipped, hasn't been updated for more than 340 days.  I'm sure there's a reason.

But now, allow me to thank the staff at NBC for neatly providing affiliate stations and prospective advertising clients NBC primetime and specials programming schedules for the remainder of 2012.

Local station salespeople have always told me they would much rather sell a program name than a time period.  Listings in APT give AE's additional confidence needed to sell specific demographic audiences rather than low-cost ROS packages.

Guys and Gals in New York, thank you for your hard work this week.  You deserve the weekend off.

One point the Times didn't mention in this article, perhaps because it's too easy to kick The Peacock when it's down. NBC's CPMs may be going up compared to last year, but the M (the audience size) part of the CPM has been going down for the last decade.

"Another" Scratches: Saturday Ratings Will Plunge

With the announced scratching of the winner of the Kentucky Derby and The Preakness a few moments ago, estimate viewership of what is now just a horse race this Saturday were revised on client inventories this morning.

Boy, the NBC Cable folks sold this out the wazzoo...  let's see how they like last minute changes THEY don't know about.
