As I work with these schedules and audience estimates, it seems NBC has made an increase in their investment in Global RallyCross.   All of the changes above are designed to place what is essentially untested paid programming on a network scale in time periods JUST before major sporting events, the Hall of Fame Game on August 3rd and just before the Steelers@Panthers (both markets are very truck-friendly and highly likely to be watching this game) on September 21st.

No matter why the folks at 30 Rock are treating this client this way, Global Rallycross doesn't have a reliable diary PAV story, so my SWAG numbers are weak sauce..

There are going to be some confused and hung-over folks waking up in Hawaii on 1/1/15 and seeing live hockey on their morning TV sets.   During a visit to client KPOI-FM in the early 1980's, I woke up very early in my hotel room one morning, turned on the TV and watched a live telecast of the LaGrange Pet Parade on WGN before dawn Hawaii time...  sorta odd, as I had marched in that parade several times in my childhood and I remembered the mid-day June heat in suburban Chicago.  To look out and see Waikiki Beach before dawn while looking at live shots of my childhood hometown seemed very futuristic.

The Stanley Cup finals between the Rangers and Los Angeles Kings are the ninth being carried by NBC and its cable companion, NBCSN (and its Versus and OLN antecedents), a long period of media stability for the N.H.L. Under NBC, the finals have averaged as many as 5.7 million viewers (last year’s Original Six battle between Boston and Chicago) and as few as 1.8 million (the 2007 Ottawa-Anaheim series). Now, as teams from the nation’s two largest markets meet, some wonder if this is the formula for record viewership.

It is not. Or more correctly, we do not know for certain. The hypothesis has not been tested often enough with the right teams in the markets.

“A great rating is about how long the series goes,” said Sam Flood, the executive producer of NBC Sports. “We’re rooting for the opposite team to win each game.”

Translation: The network makes more money the longer a series goes, and, by the way, it’s more exciting if it’s not a sweep....
