More Olympic Time Period Changes, But WHY?

I'm sure there's a good reason for all of these changes just weeks in advance. But do local stations know what they are?

Sadly, my guess is that all these titling and timing tweaks are intended to manipulate national peoplemeter results to benefit network posts of schedules already sold with guaranteed delivery.

So, 180+ local stations scream "how high?" whenever 30 Rock decides to play a game with timing. Do you think all of them change all of these programs each time NBC sneezes?

In reality, the vast majority are so exhausted from the constant changes of programming, most stations do not have accurate inventory in their sales systems. But no one will admit it.

After redoing the estimates for these program splits on 2/23, I growl when I see that they've done another "Kentucky Derby bait and switch" tactic. Tell all the local stations the event will be three hours. Have them sell the block. Position the spots in the first half hour later, while it's still one block. But just before airing, re-title the block into two chunks... and suddenly announce a format change with most spots falling in the lesser valued PAV.

That way, the network spots sold in the actual event earns the event rating, and the station avails... "well, they ARE the little people, aren't they? Are they even smart enough to figure this out? Heck, we've been hosing the stations for decades... why would they complain now?"

Think I'm wrong? Notice the Closing Ceremony, now broken into two halves, isn't broken when it's replayed overnight? It's all about SALES on the network level; they probably just bonus these overnights.

Mid-Season Dates Announced

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. — January 10, 2014 — NBC has announced premiere dates for five of its upcoming midseason series — comedies “About a Boy” and “Growing Up Fisher,” dramas “Believe” and “Crisis,” and alternative program “American Dream Builders.”

Created for television by Jason Katims (“Friday Night Lights,” “Parenthood”), “About a Boy” — based on the best-selling Nick Hornby novel — will premiere in its regular time period Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 9 p.m. ET/PT leading out of “The Voice.” A few days earlier, however, the first episode of the show will preview in primetime during the Olympics on Friday, Feb. 21 (10:30 p.m.) immediately following NBC’s coverage of the Winter Games from Sochi, Russia that night.

“Growing Up Fisher,” from creator DJ Nash and starring J.K. Simmons and Jenna Elfman, will premiere in its regular time period Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 9:30 p.m. with “About a Boy” as its lead-in. “Growing Up Fisher” will also have its first episode premiere during the Olympics on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 10:30 p.m., following coverage of the Closing Ceremonies.

“Believe,” from executive producers J.J. Abrams (“Revolution”) and Alfonso Cuarón (“Gravity”), who also directed the pilot, will have a special preview Monday, March 10 at 10 p.m. following “The Voice” and will premiere in its regular time period Sunday, March 16 at 9 p.m. “Believe” is a suspense drama that follows a unique 10-year-old girl with incredible powers who must be protected from falling into the wrong hands.

“Crisis,” starring Gillian Anderson and Dermot Mulroney, will premiere Sunday, March 16 at 10 p.m. The series examines to what extremes elite and influential Washington, D.C., parents will go to when their children are put in jeopardy by a man who is out for revenge.

The Nate Berkus-hosted reality competition series “American Dream Builders” will premiere Sunday, March 23 at 8 p.m. The hourlong series pits 12 of the country’s most accomplished designers and builders against each other as they tackle massive home renovation projects, featuring unique architectural styles, resulting in some jaw-dropping transformations.

Triple Crown Race Days Booked in APT

Aside from the Kentucky Derby on 5/3, Preakness on 5/17 and Belmont Stakes on 6/7 listed in APT today, there is likely to be a Kentucky Derby special airing in mid-April. RatingBook.com clients have that program in inventory, along with confirmation of the above race dates.

Clients seem to prefer breaking up the Kentucky Derby into at least two smaller time-period blocks rather than the entire window APT suggests; Nielsen uses PAVs based on multiple program titles submitted for the pre-show and the race itself, which always out-performs the preceding hours.

1st and 2nd Quarter Sports Specials Changes Begin

Lots of title changes for soccer games, and a few sports specials and Incredible Dog Challenge get moved.. APT is just now being updated, so I'll post them when 30 Rock has finished typing.

As of 4pm, EST, there are 19 changes in NBC Sports Specials in APT. I'll wait until after 5pm their time before closing up client inventories, as 30 Rock likes to save little parting gifts for delivery on their way to the elevator. :)

"The Blacklist" Gets Second Season

Must admit I'm eager to see diary market demos for this program. Right now, I'm only privy to some LPM hints and the National numbers, but those don't always equate to smaller markets.

December 22 update: Wow! Blacklist produced fantastic demos in Chattanooga, and shares didn't drop off greatly as Sweeps progressed. This program has legs for a couple of years, it seems.
