In a stunning admission, Alan Wurtzel, president of research and media
development for NBCUniversal, told Variety that the volume of DVR
playback viewing during prime time has reached the point where it’s
beating the viewership of all the big networks combined.
It means that what the TV industry wonks call “time-shifting” —
watching a show on a DVR or on-demand sometime after it has aired — has
gone mainstream.
“This behavior is no longer about a bunch of 25-year-olds who wear
black and live in Williamsburg,” Wurtzel said. “It affects everybody
across the country.”
