Clients will, of course, get both inventory and estimates for these dates.  However, based on what little I know about the NHL lockout, the first two games are highly unlikely to air.

This is the Green Bay @ Houston game, perhaps with professional refs.

News Directors Alert: While NBC may be moving around spots within this and the pre-game show, the net result is local newscasts get pushed back further on a weekend where CBS does not have a double-run, hence CBS affiliated late news will air at the top of the hour.  Perhaps this will happen on October 28th as well.


With so much money already booked for "issue" and political advertising in local newscasts, changes are quite painful.

NBC Moving Many Start Times Back 1 Minute..

Perhaps it's a new technique brought in by the new boss, but many half hour shows now start at :01 or :31.

Consider how this will impact various methodologies:

•  LPM meters will have no problem with this
• Rentrak and other all-digital systems should do as well as LPM
• HH Meters?  Ahh...  devices made using 70's technology and time-keeping.. and they use..
• Diaries for demographics are very forgiving.  Those diary keepers who do enter viewing live (bless their rare hearts) aren't checking digital clocks for precision..  they focus more on program names. 

 For diary markets especially, it will be interesting to see how NBC changes how they use the critical 5 minutes before and after each quarter-hour with this new shift.

NHL Labor Dispute Causes NBC/Comcast Problems

The worst case scenario for Comcast-owned NBC, which holds the exclusive national broadcast rights to NHL games, is for the entire upcoming season to be canceled. That's not without precedent. The NHL and its players union scrapped the entire 2004-05 season after failing to achieve a labor deal.

A better, but not ideal, scenario for NBC would be a delay to the NHL season, similar to what happened to the National Basketball Association last year. The first regular season NHL game is scheduled for October 11, but exhibition games start about two weeks earlier. 

The timing could not be worse for Comcast, which is relying on hockey to build up the NBC Sports Network, its fledgling cable sports channel. A lockout would leave the network, previously known as Versus and the Outdoor Life Network, with major holes to fill in its prime-time lineup.
